Women account for 50% the world’s working-age population – but are largely misrepresented.
The tech field is notoriously male-dominated at all levels—considerably worse than in non-tech industries.
Top barriers experienced by women in tech include lack of mentors, lack of female role models in the field, gender bias in the workplace, unequal growth opportunities, compared to men and unequal pay for the same skills
Techstars Startup Weekend want to continue efforts in cultivating a wholly inclusive community. A key component of that vision is empowering women to pursue their dreams and build tools that change the world. having a diversity of perspectives and ideas leads to better experiences, more relevant outputs, better leaders, and makes the community much more interesting. Techstars Startup Weekend want to embody a culture that does not make women feel like they have to prove themselves, and support women in finding a new level of confidence in their abilities to succeed.
During the month of September, Davao City will participate in a series of Techstars Startup Weekends held across cities in Asia Pacific focused on engaging and celebrating women + diversity + inclusion in local communities.
“This is the first time that we will do a Startup Weekend in Davao with majority of the participants would be women. Ninety percent (90%) of the tickets will be allocated for women attendees. We believe that by creating the right environment, a safe space to innovate and learn by doing and given the right tools, women will be better positioned to drive transformational change in our community and beyond”, Mary Rose Ofianga, Founder, Womenpowered Institute.
Techstars Startup Weekend is the world’s starting point for entrepreneurship. The 54-hour event is where designers, developers, marketers, and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, and launch startups.
Last December 2017, 38 business ideas were generated from 70 attendees and 11 teams created who worked together to build the ideas over the weekend.
The event kicks off on Friday night with a “Pitch Fire,” where participants are given 60 seconds to pitch an idea for a business. The best ideas are voted on and multidisciplinary teams are formed around the concept of their choice. Teams have 54 hours to develop a unique product (apps, mostly) to be presented to an experienced panel of judges on Sunday evening.
Participants attended not just to excel among other teams but to learn the tools of building up a business idea into a working application and benefit from conferences and feedback from coaches, mentors and past participants.
Techstars Startup Weekend Women Davao is happening on September 28-30, 2018 at PLDT Building, Ponciano St., Davao City. Interested participants can register at http://bit.ly/swwomendavao.
