Or how the country’s pop princess was able nail a show that did not require her to do what was highly expected from her. Yes, singer, actress and endorser Sarah Geronimo ditched all her bouncy dance moves that we’re all accustomed to every Sunday noon to a more intimate show for the Davao leg of her “The Great Unknown” concert tour.
The 28 year old Sarah G., fondly crowned as the country’s “Popstar Royalty”, nailed her sold-out concert last Friday, March 3, at the SMX Convention Center of SM Lanang Premier.
There were some who literally shrieked and begged her to bust a move but most just let her do what she does best, and that is to sing. And sing she did, semi-unplugged style. Throughout the evening, Sarah performed her songs re-arranged and rendered on instruments that were not electronically amplified. Her recent hits “Ikot Ikot”, “Kilometro” and “Tala”, both known for their upbeat melodies, were played on the said, slowed down format. And it worked.
It was also very brave for her to concoct a repertoire consisting of all original songs – except for the cover of “You’ve Got a Friend”, which she sang live with her father Delfin (they both recorded the track for her 2013 album “Expressions”). Only a mature artist could also pull off a concert that kicks off with barely popular, previously unreleased numbers. It only proves that she needs not reintroduce herself over and over again. With half of her life spent in the entertainment industry, that would’ve been quite redundant.
In almost all her numbers, Sarah also eschewed those “birit” notes and flaunted instead her lower and mid-range, a reinvention that’s warmly welcomed by her fans who know very well that she can show off those attention-seeking steely pipes anytime anyway.
During the concert, Sarah performed her collaboration with Yeng Constantino ”Kaibigan Mo” (with one of her back-up singers), the laidback track “Ako’y Para Lamang sa’ Yo”, the anthemic “Mysteryo”, the melodious, the uplifting “Sabi Mo Sa Akin”, the R&B-tinged “Baby You’re The Reason”, and the heartwarming “Only For You,” all from the album she co-produced with Civ Fontanilla.
Sarah also performed the mellow title-track of her latest album with Champ Lui-Pio of the alternative-pop band Hale. Champ, whose father is the famous award-winning composer Nonoy Tan of the 80s band “Wadab”, proudly announced to the audience that his family is from Davao.
Over-all, the show exuded with love and romance with all the ballads and mid-tempo numbers that essentially made it as her post-Valentine date with her avid Dabawenyo fans. With or without those brisk dance routines with the G-Force, Sarah can truly slay it in any way she wants it to.
The Davao leg of Sarah Geronimo’s “The Great Unknown” concert was produced by EKG Productions, owned and managed by Mr. & Mrs. Emil & Kate Gayap. This was co-presented by Belo Medical Group, Belo Essentials, Michaela and Phoenix Petroleum.
